Ajay Maken obtained his B.A. degree from the University of Delhi. It was during while he was studying in university, he was made the student president in the year 1985-86. His family had a political background and thus under their influence, he made his foray into Indian politics.
He first contested elections for the post of MLA during the 1993 legislative election of Delhi in 1993 and retained his post for three successive terms from 1993 to 2004. During his second term, he was made the Parliamentary Secretary in Sheila Dikshit's cabinet. A couple of years laters, he was given the post of Tourism, Power and Transport Minister. He was the man behind introducing CNG in Public Transport system. While in power sector, he privatized the power supply in Delhi.
He then created history by becoming the youngest speaker of a legislative assembly. He was just 39 by then. After serving as an MLA for 11 years, he was finally handed a Lok Sabha ticket by his party and won from New Delhi constituency during 2004 general elections. While serving as a Lok Sabha MP, he held various prestigious posts.
After the Congress Party downfall started from 2014 general elections, he was made the party president of Delhi and was also declared Chief Minister Candidate of Delhi in the 2015 assembly elections in Delhi. Unfortunately, he couldn’t win his party a single seat out of 70 seats that were up for grabs. He resigned from his post immediately after the results. He was again made the Party President and campaigned aggressively during the recently concluded MCD elections of Delhi. He couldn’t make much of a change though and his party was stranded at the third position. He again resigned from his post of Party President in Delhi.
