Alka Lamba began her political career by becoming the student leader from the National Students Union of India by getting elected as the President of the University of Delhi. Subsequently, she got an offer to join the Indian National Congress in 2006 and she joined the party. She was handed various prestigious local and national portfolios which she handled from 2007 to 2011. In 2013 though, she resigned from the party realizing the public outrage against them and joined the budding political party AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) in 2013. On the back of credible face of Arvind Kejriwal, she got elected as an MLA from the Chandni Chowk constituency of Delhi in the 2015 assembly elections in Delhi.
She was backed by the top brass of AAP such as Manish Sisodiya and Ashish Khetan. She was made the Parliamentary Secretary in Kejriwal’s government. Though this move was questioned and created a whole lot of controversy.
Besides politics, Lamba is also a social worker. Lamba established 'Go India Foundation' an NGO in 2006 with the aim of encouraging youth and empowering youths and educate citizens about their rights and persuade them to contribute to the social, economic and political development of the nation. The NGO’s main aim though is to deal with the women's issues. Lamba has toured Russia, UK, China, US, and Venezuela and gave speeches on the subject of Human Rights, Sustainable Development and women empowerment.
