Aribam Syam Sharma is a music composer and film director who hail from the north-east state of Manipur in India. He made his debut in the Manipuri film as an actor with the movie titled Matamgi Manipur. After that, he branched out to the direction and made his directorial debut with the film titled Lamja Parshuram in 1974. This film created history by becoming the first ever Manipuri film to run in theatres for over 100 days. His film Olangthagee Wangmadasu released in 1979 became the first ever and to date the only Manipuri film to run for over 25 weeks. The film ran a total of 28 weeks in theatres.
His directorial venture Imagi Ningthem earned him international fame when the movie won the Montgolfiere d' Or in 1982 at the Festival of Three Continents at Nantes.
His famous venture The Chosen One became the first Manipuri film to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1991.
For his contribution, Indian government honoured him with the Padmashri Award in 2006. Besides that he has been honoured with several other awards and one such award is the Jewel of Manipuri Cinema Award for his invaluable contribution to the Manipuri cinema.
