Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee completed his schooling from Sailendra Sirkar Vidyalaya. He pursued his graduation in literature from Presidency College in Kolkata. He came out in support of Vietnam’s cause in the year 1968. He joined politics by joining Communist Party of India. He was given the post of secretary in the youth wing of CPI (M) called as Democratic Youth Federation.
He became an MLA for the first time in assembly elections held in West Bengal during 1977 and this was for the first time that along with Left Front, CPI (M) came to power in the state of West Bengal. Though he lost the election in 1982 but won it again in 1987 assembly elections.
He is an ardent traveller and in his political career has travelled to many countries of the world like Vietnam, Singapore, USSR, France, Singapore and Great Britain. He didn’t shift to Chief Minister’s residence and instead was living at his own 1 bedroom apartment in Kolkata. He was presented as the CM face of West Bengal after Jyoti Basu stepped down and served as the Chief Minister of Bengal from 2001 to 2011.
He holds a very clean image and during his tenure, he risked by industrialising West Bengal which was till then a state dependent upon agriculture. This move didn’t go well with the common public and he was finally defeated from his own constituency in 2011 elections. Since then TMC has been in power in Bengal.
