Divya Dutta completed her school level education at the Sacred Heart Convent School in Ludhiana. Prior to starting her acting career, she began her career as a model. She made her acting debut with the Hindi film Ishq Me Jeena Ishq Mein Marna in the year 1994. She played her first lead role in the film Veergati in the year 1995. She was cast opposite Salman Khan in this film but the film failed to perform at the box-office. In the decade of the 90s, she acted in numerous Hindi films but failed to establish herself as a leading lady in Bollywood.
She made her Punjabi film debut with the film titled Shaheed-e-Mohabbat Boota Singh in the year 1999. This was her first of many more memorable roles opposite veteran Punjabi actor Gurdas Maan. The film was a huge hit at the box-office and also her performance too was hailed. She received wide acclaim for her supporting role in super hit Hindi film Veer Zaara. Since then she has been a regular feature in Hindi as well as Punjabi films. She has also done some Nepali films as well.
She was heavily praised for her performance in International films like The Last Lear. She is mostly seen playing minor or supporting roles but playing meaningful roles. For her performance in Punjabi film Sukhmani: Hope for Life, she was awarded Best Actress award at the PTC Punjabi Film Award. Among her recent films, her performance in films like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Badlapur was heavily praised. In addition to the silver screen, she has also acted in television series Samvidhaan.
She has also published her book Me and Ma which describes her relationship with her mother in the year 2017.
