She graduated in English literature and after completion of her degree, she participated in a workshop on theatre in Mumbai. Kamalinee made her Bollywood debut in Phir Milenge in 2004, a movie which was based on the subject of AIDS. Movie didn’t do well and she also went unnoticed, but she gained recognition through the multiple-award winner Telugu Film Anand which got released in the same year.
After receiving accolades for her representation of a strong-willed, liberal and a new aged woman in Anand, her next film was Meenakshi which released the following year in 2005. The film couldn’t gain much commercial success, but Mukherjee briefed media by saying that she didn’t regret doing such films and that it was indeed a huge learning curve for her.
The film critics, however praised Mukherjee for her acting skills. In the year 2006, she featured in two Telugu language films - Style and Godavari and a Tamil film, Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu. Her movies kept doing well and she has been a prominent face in South and Bengali films and so far has acted in 30 movies.
