Omar’s grandfather Sheikh Abdullah and father Omar Abdullah have been the former Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir. He completed his school education from The Burn Hall School, Srinagar and The Saint Lawrence School, Sanwar. He enrolled at Sydenham College in Mumbai and completed his graduation from there and to MBA, he enrolled at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. However, he didn’t complete his MBA.
He started his political career at the age of 29 by getting elected as an MP in the 12th Lok Sabha elections held in 1998. The following year, he got re-elected to Lok Sabha. He was made the Union Minister of State. In 2001, he created history by becoming the youngest ever Union Minister for External Affairs. He held this post for one year before resigning from the post.
In 2007, two rifle grenades targeted him, but somehow he escaped. His passionate speech in the Lok Sabha vote of confidence in 2008 won many a hearts and added massively to his growing fan base. During 2008, state elections in Kashmir, his party called National Conference Party along with the coalition of Congress party formed the government in Jammu & Kashmir and he was sworn in as the 11th Chief Minister of the State in January 2009. The very same year, he was involved in a sex scandal and offered resignation from his post. However, his resignation was not accepted and he remained the Chief Minister till 2014.
