Ratan received his graduation degree from National School of Drama, New Delhi in the year 1974. In his hometown, he has established a theatre group popular known as Chorus Repertory Theatre. All of his works have some meaning and story behind it. One of his plays named Andha Yug was performed in an open air in Hiroshima, Japan on the 49th anniversary of Atom bomb dropped on the city. He is also known for his use of traditional martial arts in his plays like Urubhangam. One of the most popular and major plays of Ratan Include Ritusamharam which says the silence and peace amidst of utter violence in the world.
Considering his work and passion for stage plays and contribution towards theatre, the government of India awarded him with prestigious Padma Shri Award in the Year 1989. Apart from these, Ratan was also awarded Sangeet Natak Academic Fellowship award which is considered to be the highest honour in the field of Arts. He has also been the vice chairman of Sangeet Natak Akademi. Ratan was also the director of Nation School of Drama from the year 1987-88. Currently, he is the chairperson of his alma mater The National School of Drama.
