He was born in a family of artists. He used to accompany his father who was known for making documentary films. He graduated from Film & Television Institute of India. Till date, he has directed 45 feature films and some 41 documentary films. He is one of the founding members of the prestigious Indian Society of Cinematographers. For his splendid work, he was honoured by the Japanese society of Cinematographers and has also served as jury for the Busan Film Festival.
He has directed some of the worldwide acclaimed films like Ashoka, Halo, The Terrorist, Tahaan, Parambha and Malli to name a few. In addition to films, he has shot advertisements for famous brands like Cadbury, BPL, Pepsi, Lays, Santro, Voltas, Kerala Tourism, Bhima Jewelry and Indian Express amongst others.
He has earned highest fame as a cinematographer. His famous films as a cinematographer are Roja, Barsaat, Fiza, Dil Se, Bride and Prejudice, Urumi, Iruvar, and Raavanan just to name a few. He became the first person from Asia Pacific region, who has received membership of the American Society of Cinematographers. His rare achievements include 11 National and 16 International awards.
He is married to Deepa since 1993 and the couple is blessed with two children.
