TarunTejpal topped the headlines lately after a woman reporter filed a complaint against him of sexually harassing her in 2013. After the accusation, he stepped down from the post of editor of Tehelka. Managing editor of Tehelka Shoma Choudhary too resigned from her post of managing editor after an outburst against her by media and also in social media demanding her to be axed from her post due to wrong handling of the sensitive case.
Tejpal’s father was in the army and as a result, he lived his childhood at various places in the country. He obtained his graduation degree from the University of Punjab in Chandigarh. He started his professional career as a journalist. He got employed at one of the prominent English newspapers in India, The Indian Express in the 1980s. Thereafter, he worked at India Today magazine, Outlook Publications and The Financial Express. He established his publishing company called India Ink. His company published Booker Prize-winning novel titled The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy in 1998.
After working for some years at Outlook publications, he co-founded the Tehelka magazine. The magazine's sting operations became immensely popular and one such investigation of ‘Operation West End’ was arguably one of the biggest investigations carried out by the magazine. In his illustrious career, he was conferred with several awards and honours.
He has also penned down few novels like The Alchemy of Desire and Story of my Assassins among others.
