Ustad Vilayat Khan was born on 28th August 1928 in Gauripur, British India. He is one of India's noted Sitar maestro and a Composer. Along with  Ali Akbar Khan, Ravi Shankar, Nikhil Banerjee and Imrat Khan, Vilayat Khan was instrumental in introducing Indian Classical Music to the West. He recorded his foremost 78-RPM disc while he was just 8 years old and performed his last in a concert in 2004 at the age of 75.

Career

Vilayat Khan's professional career was substantial.  He has a part of many international tours; he has done several recordings, and has composed music for several films, including Satyajit Ray's "Jalsagar".  In a concert organized by Vikramaditya Sangeet Parishad, Mumbai in the year 1944, his performance drew the headline as "Electrifying Sitar". Although, Vilayat Khan's professional career was full of war of words, much of which was a result of his loyal adherence to his theory.  He was a longtime critic of the political schemes that were behind the awarding of many of India's honors.  He refused the Padmashri, Padmabhushan, and Padmavibhusan awards, and heavily criticized the way in which All India Radio was run.  The sole title that he ever accepted was the title Aftab-e-Sitar. 
 
He married twice and from his first marriage, he had three children: Sufi singer Zila Khan, Yaman Khan, and Shujaat. From his second marriage, he had one son, Hidayat who is also a professional sitarist.

Death Info

Ustad Vilayat Khan died due to lung cancer on 13-03-2004. Before his death he had been recording for over 65 years, broadcasting on All India Radio and been seen as a Ustad for 60. He was the first Indian musician to play in England after independence in 1951.
