Abhijit Banerjee was born on 21-02-1961 in Kolkata in the state of West Bengal, India. He is an Indian-born American Economist, Scientist, Professor, Researcher, Writer, Author, Co-founder & Managing Director of J-Pal (Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab). He along with his wife Esther Duflo won the Nobel Memorial Prize 2019.

Abhijeet Banerjee is a renowned Indian origin American economist. He was raised in Kolkata where his parents were professor. His mother was an economics professor and hence he too obtained his postgraduate degree in economics. Post that, he went to Harvard and obtained his Ph.D  in Economics from there. His doctoral thesis subject was "Essays in Information Economics." After that, he settled in the US. He started his career as a professor in the Harvard University.
 
He is currently a professor of economics at the famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He along with his wife and colleague has advocated field experiments as an important method of discovering causal relationships in economics. For his achievements and experiments, he has been felicitated with various honours. He co-authored a book titled Poor Economics along with his wife Esther Duflo in the year 2012 and for this book they won the Gerald Loeb Award Honorable Mention. In 2019, he along with his wife and economist Michael Kremer won the Nobel Prize in Economics for their work alleviating global poverty.  His latest book A Short History of Poverty Measurements was released in the year 2019.
