Akkineni Nageswara Rao was born in a middle class family in Andhra Pradesh. At the age of 10, he got associated with the theatre and that is how his journey started. Some of the noted dramas of which, he was a part are Kanakatara, Harishchandra, Telugu Talli, Satyanveshanam, and Aasajyoti among others. He was spotted by legendary filmmaker Ghantasala Balaramaiah spotted him at Vijaywada railway statio and offered him the lead role in cult classic film Seeta Rama Jananam. He did play a supporting role prior to this film but this film brought him under limelight.
 
In a career that spanned over 7 decades, he went on to star in over 250 films including Telugu, Tamil, and Bollywood films. He played a range of characters in his decorated career. From supporti ng roles to lead roles to comedian to character roles. One of his roles which needs a special mention is his role in cult classic film Devadasu.His fans used to refer him as Natasamrat. For his performances, he was felicitated with various awards including Padmi Shri, Padma Bhusan, and Dada Saheb Phalke Award among many others. 
 
Off the sets, he has some business interests too. He was deeply involved with a lot of charitable trusts and also started his own non charitable trusts such as Akkineni International Foundation and The Annapurna International School of Film and Media.
