He was seeking to opt the field of hockey at his 5th birthday, and he started playing in the junior Arizona Bobcats children's team. He plays both baseball and hockey. However, he hates the lazy speed of the game and prefers the fast-moving style of hockey. The Everett Silvertips selected him into the  (57th) of overall at Bantam Draft 2012 from the Western Hockey League. This allows 15-year-olds to join the Canadian Major Junior League. Matthews prefers to opt for the National Team US development program of( United States National Team Development) which competes in the United States Hockey League (USHL), representing the highest junior league in the United States. For the 2013-2014 seasons, he plays for the under-17 team, where he is noticed by recruiters of the National Hockey League (NHL), even being highlighted on the NHL website with a focus on his atypical career in the southwestern United States.
 
He signed the contract with Lions 11 ZSCs for one year on Aug 7, 2015, playing in the first division of the Swiss League (LNA).  Marc Crawford, coach of the Lions, approached him who was impressed of his skating skills and protection of the puck during the world championship under 18. On Feb 3, 2016,  winning of (2015-2016) in the final of the Swiss Cup of (Lausanne HC). Also, he won the award of  (NLA Rising Star).
Matthews made his NHL debut in the first game of the season, October 12, 2016, against the Ottawa Senators. He scored four goals in the match against Craig Anderson. This is the first player since the modern look of the NHL succeeds this performance 23; Joe Malone and Harry Hyland scored five goals each in their first NHL game on December 19, 1917 (the first-ever game in league history).  Matthews is the first NHL player to have the record for the most extended number of games with a cage shot since his debut. He put an end to its series of 103 games cons the Calgary Flames, 28 November 2017. 
 
In January 2018, it is again the only player the Leafs selected to attend the 63 the Star game. On February 24, he is still injured this time at the shoulder. Initially, it should be absent at least ten days, but he does not return before March 22, when he scored a goal in a 5-2 victory against the Nashville Predators. Toronto qualifies again for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but the team is eliminated in the first round by the Boston Bruins.
