At 77, his interest in politics never seems to wither away, as proved by his determination to run for the president’s post of the USA. His willingness to be part of writing the country’s history stems from his fascination for politics. It’s even visible in his presidential campaign tagline that reads
– “Change will never come without political participation. Join the political revolution today.”
 
Sanders became interested in politics at an early age. Sanders parents were Jews who saw lost a significant part of his family in the Second World War holocaust. His interest in politics was kindled by one of the most infamous political figures in the world’s history – Adolf Hitler. Sanders was perplexed as to how a man elected by the people was powerful enough to destroy 50 million lives out of which 6 million were Jews. It was then he knew the power politics held and vowed to make use of it to do good for the people.
 
After graduating in 1964, from the University of Chicago with an arts degree in political science, he moved to Vermont. He started molding his political life, by participating in March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Incidentally there he also had the opportunity to listen to Martin Luther King, Jr famous speech – I have a dream. Since then, he participated in various movements and civil rights activities, which made him a public figure.               
 
His significant recognition came in when he decided to serve people for the first time in 1981, as the Mayor of Burlington. Running his major elections for the first time, he won the seat by a margin of just ten votes. The win motivated him further to serve the people so well that he was re-elected as the mayor of Burlington for four consecutive terms.
 
As the next step in his career, Sanders became the first independent candidate to be elected for the United States House of Representatives. He was elected continuously till 2007, making him the longest-serving independent candidate in the American Congress History.  His next milestone was - becoming a senator by getting elected to the US Senate in 2007.
 
His ideals and ideas gained him popularity as a leader. Sanders talents earned his position as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs. He is also a member of the Environment and Public works Committee, Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and Education, Labour, and Pensions Committee. With new hopes, dreams, and vigor he is running again for the 2020 US presidential race. Sander’s hoping to make the best of his idea and ideals to usher America along with him into a new era.

As a result he became step father of 3 children named Dave Driscoll, Carina Driscoll, and Heather Driscoll.

  • While studying in high school, he was active in track events and even managed to finish in the 3rd place in the New York City indoor one-mile race.
  • While he was studying at the University of Chicago, he became a member of the Young People’s Socialist League (the youth affiliate of the Socialist Party of America).
  • During the Vietnam war, he applied for conscientious objector status. Later, his application was eventually turned down because, by that time, he had become too old to be drafted in the armed forces.
  • In 1971, he became a member of the Liberty Union Party and started his electoral political career. He was party’s nominee for governor of Vermont in 1972 and 1976. He was also party’s candidate for U.S. senator in 1972 and 1974.
