Buta Singh completed his graduation from Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar. Thereafter he also obtained his masters and PhD degree as well. He started his career as a journalist but soon he made his foray into politics. He associated with the Akali Dal but due to some dispute left the party and joined the Congress party in the late 1960s. On Congress party’s ticket, he got elected for the first time. After getting elected, he became a close aide of the Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and his family. He remained a loyal associate of Indira and Rahul Gandhi and eventually with Narasimha Rao as well.

 

He has been elected as a Lok Sabha MP for 8 times in his illustrious political career. Apart from serving as a Cabinet Minister thrice in his career, he has also served as the General Secretary of the party. The portfolios that he has held during his career as a Cabinet Minister are Railways, Home Ministry, Sports, Shipping, Agriculture and Parliamentary Affairs among others.

 

He published his book titled Punjabi Speaking State - A Critical Analysis. He has also written articles on Sikh History and Punjabi Literature.During the course of his career, he has also served as the Governor of Bihar. Even at the age of 82, he is still an active politician and thoroughly participated in congress election campaigns during the 2014 general elections.
