Edie Falco acted in plays as a child actor at Arena Players Repertory Theater alongside her mother. She attended Purchase College and pursued Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in acting. Initially, she appeared in small roles on television shows like Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order. The 1994 movie ‘Bullets over Broadway’ directed Woody Allen provided a big breakthrough in her acting career. Her Purchase College classmate Eric Mendelson cast her in his directorial venture titled, ‘Judy Berlin’. She again played the lead role in his next venture ‘3 Backyards’.

 

She was cast in the role of Diane Whittlesey in the popular HBO television series Oz. She had another big success in her career with the role of Carmela Soprano on the HBO television drama series ‘The Sopranos’. This series gained immense popularity and her role as the wife of Tony Soprano received wide acclamation. She bagged three Primetime Emmy Awards, five SAG Awards and two Golden Globe Awards for the role. She joined three other actors to have won all these awards in the same year. Falco appeared in the medical comedy series titled ‘Nurse Jackie’ from 2009 to 2015 and aired 80 episodes. She was cast in the role of Sylvia Wittel in the web series ‘Horace and Pete’ in 2016.

 

She has also won the Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play Award at Drama Desk Awards for her role in ‘The House of Blue Leaves’. Falco also received a nomination at Tony Awards for the same role. She is the spokesperson for Health Care for America Now. She’s an advocate of Alcoholics Anonymous’ 12- step program. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in the year 2003. Falco has adopted two children.
