George Fernandes was born on 03-06-1930 in Mangalore in the state of Karnataka, India. He was an Indian Politician, Writer, Editor, Author, Journalist, Agriculturist & Founder of the Samata Party. He had served as a Railway Minister and Defence Minister of India.

George Fernandes was a renowned name in the world of politics. The 86-year old political leader held various portfolios at the Central Ministry. Born in 1930 in Madras Presidency, (Present Karnataka), he began his political career as a trade unionist. He was a native of Mangalore and had gone to Bangalore in 1946 to become a priest but instead, he moved to Bombay in 1949 and became the union leader of a Socialist Trade Union. He was very proactive and had even opposed Indira Gandhi openly during Emergency in 1975. He even had to go underground to prevent arrest. However, he was still arrested in 1976 and tried in Baroda Dynamite Case.
 
Post-lifting of Emergency he fought from Muzzafarpur Constituency, Bihar and won. He was given the charge of Union Minister of Industries and during his reign he ordered companies like IBM and Coca-Cola to leave India, citing investment violations. During 1989-1990 he was the Railway Minister and strongly promoted Konkan Railways project. When Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA formed Government in 1998, he was given the defense ministry. He played an important part in Pokhran Nuclear test and Kargil War.
 
George Fernandez had also written several books and articles in Konkani as well as the English language. The eloquent politician won Lok Sabha elections 9 times from 1967 onwards. He was fluent in various languages including Tulu, Marathi, Urdu, Tamil, Malayalam, Latin etc. In 1971, he married Leila Kabir daughter of Union Minister Humayun Kabir. They divorced in 1980 and since then he had been with Jaya Jaitley.

George Fernandes died on 29-01-2019 in New Delhi, India at the age 88. He was suffering from a prolonged illness. Before some days, he was caught by swine flu. The family member had taken him Hospital in New Delhi. On Tuesday morning i.e. 29th Jan 2019, the doctors declared that he is no more.
