Ghulam Nabi Azad completed his schooling at his ancestral town and his college studies from Banderwah town. He then completed his masters in Zoology. He enrolled at the NCC (National Cadet Corps) in 1972 and at the young age of 24, he joined politics. He started his political career with one of the India’s largest political party Indian National Congress. He was made the Block Secretary of Party’s Committee. In 1980, he was made the President of Jammu & Kashmir Youth Congress. The very same year he got elected as a Lok Sabha MP from Washim constituency. 

 

He became a Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs in 1984. After which he held almost all the top positions of the party within the state and was again made the Union Minister under UPA 1 till 2005. The biggest highlight of his career came when he became the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir in 2005. 

 

It was he, who brought Congress in power in Jammu & Kashmir after a long wait of 30 years.  Currently, he has been made the leader of opposition in the upper house of Parliament. He is congress go to men. When in crisis, he has bailed his party out more often than not. He is one of the most prominent political figures of Jammu & Kashmir.
