Kadambini Ganguly was born on 18-07-1861 in Bhagalpur, Bengal Presidency, British India (now in the state of Bihar, India). She was an Indian Doctor, Physician & Scientist who became the 1st woman to get admission into Calcutta Medical College in 1884 and practiced with a degree in Western medicine.

Kadambini was one of the first Indian female graduates in India. The lady is also a South Asian female physician and surgeon, trained in western medicine. She studied in Bangla Mahila Vidyalaya which later merged with Bethune school. She completed her graduation from the University of Calcutta in fine arts. She is one of the first two female candidates to achieve the same. She was truly a pathbreaker to educate spaces an inspiration for plenty of women to fight for their right to formal education.

She started working at  Lady Dufferin Women’s Hospital worth a salary of Rs 200 per month. She then decides to travel to London in 1892 for further education. The lady wants to be strong opposition from her colleagues and administrative staff, & wants to show female power. She returned from London with the prestigious qualifications of LRCP (Edinburgh), GFPC (Dublin), and LRCS (Glasgow). She is known as the first woman in entire South Asia to become a practitioner of western medicine with foreign qualifications.

The lady then married Dwarakanath Ganguly, who is a prominent Brahmo reformer with eight children. He truly supported her wife in professional aspirations & education. They both faced considerable backlash from both the Brahmo Samaj and the upper caste Bhadralok community. The spiritual lady was even referred to as a ‘courtesan’ by Maheshchandra Pal, who is an editor of a renowned Bengali periodical   and had to suffered imprisoned for six months

The strong lady was also involved in several movements, which contributed to India’s freedom struggle. She became the first woman to be on the  session of the Indian National Congress. She organized many movements during the partition of Bengal and assemble the Women’s Conference in Calcutta in1908. She also worked extensively for the rights of female coal miners in the eastern parts of India. She takes a stand and served as the President of the Transvaal Indian Association. She continued practicing her medicine carrier until she died in 1923.
