She went to Goldsmiths, University of London, to study drama and theatre. In London, she worked with a theatre company, Theatre of Relativity for a couple of years. She performed in various plays, including "The Dispute," "The Rise of the Wild Hunt" and David Hare's "The Blue Room" during her stint with the theatre group.

 

Kalki eventually decided to relocate to Mumbai to work in Indian cinema. She started off by doing modelling assignments for television commercials. She finally made her Hindi film debut with the role of Chandramukhi (Chanda) in Anurag Kashyap's Dev.D in 2009. Kalki, who was fluent in English, Tamil and French, had to learn Hindi for her role in Dev.D. Since then she has appeared in a lot of critically acclaimed movies such as Shaitan, That Girl in Yellow Boots, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Shanghai. Her biggest commercial successful film till date is Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani which released in 2013. She was heavily praised for her performance in Margarita with a Straw in 2015. The film also won the National Award. Her upcoming films are Jiah Aur Jiah, Ribbon, CandyFlip and Azmaish-Trials of Life.

 

In addition to films, she has also produced and performed in various acclaimed plays. Her performance in the play Skeleton Woman won her the prestigious MetroPlus Playwright Award.
