Manish Malhotra started his career as a model while studying at Elphinstone College. Failure as a model led them to clothing, apparel and art. Even he was very passionate about fashion since childhood. David Dhawan was the one who gave him his first break in the Hindi films and he designed three costumes for actress Juhi Chawla for the movie Sawarg. He won the Filmfare Costume Award for the film Urmila Matondkar in Rangeela-1995, for which he got some recognition. In 1998, he started designing mainly from apparel shop Reverie -Manish Malhotra.

He became famous for using the traditional colours, craftsmanship, texture and embroidery, presented in its first runway show in November 1999, was appreciated for its glamorous ensembles. He became the most popular fashion designer in few years, and he designed the dresses for almost all the top leading actresses of 90’s such as Juhi Chawla, Karishma Kapoor, Sridevi, Raveena, Madhuri, and Manisha Koirala.

 According to the script's demand, Manish Malhotra is mastered to change the actor's 'look'.  In 2005, he launched his label with the name of Manish Malhotra, which provides bridal garments, and garment collections of men too and currently retail at two shops in Mumbai and New Delhi. This label also retails in India and in a multi-brand boutique in Dubai.

Even though International star also used to wear his designed dresses. For instance, Once Michael Jackson asked Manish to design his clothes and he was dressed in an award function. Michael's outfit was a huge hit. After this, Manish designed clothes for Michael's children. Despite that, there is no Bollywood celebrity who has not worn Manish Malhotra's designer clothes. He has successfully designed the costumes for many Bollywood hit films such as  Sawarg, Raja Hindustani, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Rangeela, Dil To Pagal Hai, Kaho Na Pyaar Hai and Mohabbateen.

He is actively involved in many social activities and he has been inspired by Indian craftsmanship and regional handicrafts and workmanship from rural India were encouraged through 'Mizwan Kalyan Society' - a non-governmental organization. Manish Malhotra worked in 2012 to promote India's regional handicrafts. He was associated with the artisans of Kashmir who were making complex embroidery for their label and had built the Kashmiri Heritage collection, which was shown on the third day of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week. To support the 'Save Child' campaign organized in JW Marriott in Mumbai on April 11, 2012, Manish Malhotra presented a show where many celebrities ramped with their daughters.
