Nabaneeta Dev Sen Complete Bio & Career

Nabaneeta Dev Sen was born and raised in Kolkata. She was born to poets and hence writing skills were automatically there in her DNA. She joined Presidency College in Kolkata and obtained her graduate degree from there. She obtained her MA in Comparative Literature from Jadhavpur University. She then went to the US and obtained in MA with distinction from Harvard University. She then joined Indiana University and obtained her PhD in Comparative Literature from there.  Post her marriage with Amartya Sen, she relocated to the UK and completed her post-doctoral research from the Cambridge University.
 
While she was in the US, she served as a visiting professor at various Universities in the US such as Columbia, Chicago, Harvard, and Cornell among others. She also visited various Canadian Universities such as British Columbia, and Toronto among others. She also participated as professor in some Universities in England, Mexico, Japan, France, and Germany. She was highly regarded for delivering the Radhakrishnan Memorial Lecture series at the prestigious Oxford University on epic poetry. After her marriage, she returned back to India and served as a professor at the Jadhavpur University. She finally retired from the Jadhavpur University in the year 2002. 
 
Over the years, she has published over 80 books in Bengali including essays, novels, short stories, and plays among others. She published her her maiden collection of poem titled Pratham Pratyay in the year 1959.  She was a well-known children author in Bengali for her adventure stories and fairy tales. Girls used to be the protagonist in her plays. She also represented India at various international conferences, both literary and academic. She also had the privilege of holding executive positions in International academic bodies such as the The International Association of Semiotic and Structural Studies and the International Comparative Literature Association among others. For her contribution to literature, she was felicitated with the Padma Shri award by the government of India in the year 2000.
