He obtained his graduate degree in arts from the Dantan Bhattar College, which was then affiliated with the historic and prestigious University of Calcutta. He is a well-known leader of the Communist Party of India. He shot to fame after getting elected to the 13th Lok Sabha in bye-election from Midnapore constituency in West Bengal in 2001.He is one of the MPs who had won thrice from the same constituency in his illustrious political career. He was re-elected in 2004 and 2009 general elections.
He has held on to several prestigious posts like Member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Railways, Member, Committee on Agriculture, Member, Committee on Estimates and Member, Standing Committee on Agriculture amongst others.
