Rana Ayyub was born to a writer father Muhammad Ayyub Waqif Khan in Maharashtra. Her father had a great influence on her. She started her career as Journalist with the Indian journal "Tehelka" which is an investigating journal based on sting operations. She worked as an investigative journalist for the Magazine. During this time, she operated a sting operation against the ministers and government officials involved in the Gujrat riots of 2002. She remained undercover for eight months and collected interviews and pictures about the case. When she presented her work before the editor-in-chief of the magazine, they denied publishing her work and said that it is incomplete to get published. Rana became disagreed with the decision and published her work in the book "Gujrat Files". 
 
She worked with Tehelka till 2013 and resigned from the job in protest of editor-in-chief of the magazine Tarun Tejpal who was accused of sexual harassment against one of her co-workers. Her next hiring was with Washington Post as contributing writer to the Global opinion section in 2019.
 
Controversy
 
She met with the controversy in February 2022 when ED attached her assets worth INR 1.77 crore in a money laundering case. It was claimed by the authority that she has used the fund collected from the public for charity for personal use.
