Richa grew up in Michigan and Pennsylvania. She joined Michigan State University where she mastered in Health Administration and Dietetics. After her education, she started modelling and participated in beauty pageants. She made it to the last 10 in the Miss India USA contests. She rose to prominence after she was crowned the Miss Michigan pageant in 2007 and thereafter she won the Miss India USA the very same year.

 

After a successful modelling career in the USA, she came to India and started her acting career. Her debut release was the Telugu film titled leader. She got her first significant role in the Telugu film titled Mirapakaay in which she was paired opposite Ravi Teja. After which, she appeared in a couple of Tamil films. The first film was a drama film Mayakkam Enna. The film was based on the subject of marriage and had a star like Dhanush in the film. The film was directed by the noted director Selvaraghavan. The film was critically praised and so was she. Her next Tamil film being Osthe, which was the Tamil remake of the blockbuster Hindi film called Dabangg. Her portrayal of Neduvaali won her huge acclaims from almost all the critics. She then made her debut in mother tongue, Bengali language film, Bikram Singha : The Lion Is Back in which she was cast opposite the prolific actor Prosenjit Chatterjee. This film was the official remake of the blockbuster Telugu film Vikramarkudu. 

 

Gangopadhyay announced that she wants to quit acting and she relocated back to the USA to pursue her MBA in 2013.
