Sheila Dixit finished her schooling level education from the Convent of Jesus and Mary School in New Delhi. She obtained her Master's Degree in History from the Miranda House College affiliated to the University of Delhi. She also holds Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Delhi.
 
Sheila Dikshit's foray into the Indian political world was by chance. Her father-in-law, Late Uma Shankar Dikshit, was a famous activist and actively participated in India's independence fight. He eventually became a union cabinet minister in Indira Gandhi’s cabinet. While he was serving his cabinet post, Sheila Dikshit assisted her father-in-law. The then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi appreciated her management skills and later nominated Dikshit as an Indian envoy to the U N Commission to discuss on the complication of the status of women. This is how she entered politics and eventually became the Chief Minister of the capital, New Delhi.
 
During her illustrious political career, she has held several important positions. Just to name a few, she served as the Union minister from the year 1986 to 1989 and held two key positions as minister of state for parliamentary affairs and as minister of state in the prime minister's office. She showed her determination in parliamentary matters and administrative works. She was the Chief Minister of Delhi for three successive terms from 1998 to 2013. After which, she served as the Governor of Kerala for a brief period from March 2014 to August 2014. She was made UP in charge during 2017 UP state elections but was soon removed as Congres made an alliance with the Samajwadi Party. Citing health reasons, she stayed away from 2019 general elections. Arguably one of the best Chief Ministers that Delhi has ever had, she will always be remembered by the people of Delhi who voted for her in numbers.

She died on 20-07-2019 at City Hospital, New Delhi, India. She was 81 years old. She was suffering from long time illness and was admitted on 20-07-2019 at City Hospital around 10:30 AM. But, she died around 03:30 PM due to a cardiac attack.
