Sonu was born in Uttrakhand and got enrolled in a local school. At the age of five, her family moved to Delhi. Sonu started singing at Jagrans along with his father and sister. After some time, Sonu moved to Mumbai where she participated in channel V's show Indian Pop Star and got popularity. At the show, music director Sandeep Chowta listened to her and gave her a break as a playback singer for the song ''Baabuji Zara Dheere Chalo''. The song was highly admired by the audience.
After it, she worked as a playback singer for many films. Some of her big hits are- ''Ishq Da Tadka, Honey Moon, Sayonee, O Sikander, Ghoonghat Na Khol, Hitchki, Lawani, Jeena, Bareilly Ke Bazaar Mein, Meri Har Ada Ke Charche, Ooh La La, etc. Sonu not only worked in Bollywood movies but also in Kannada and Tamil films. In 2020, she appeared as a judge in the Punjabi singing reality show ''Sa Re G a Pa Punjabi''.
