KaVontae Turpin was involved in a legal issue with his ex-girlfriend Raiesha Atwater during his college years at TCU. In October 2018, Turpin was arrested and charged with assault, causing bodily injury to a family member after an altercation with Atwater.
Reports state that Atwater alleged Turpin physically assaulted her during an argument, which she later described as part of a history of domestic abuse. The incident occurred near TCU’s campus, leading to Turpin’s dismissal from the football program.
This was not Turpin’s first legal trouble involving Atwater. Months earlier, while he was in New Mexico, Turpin had faced similar accusations from Atwater, though the entire legal proceedings surrounding the earlier incident are less publicized.
At that time, Atwater disclosed that she had been in a five-year relationship with Turpin. In April 2019, the Tarrant County criminal district attorney’s office announced that Turpin received probation.
As part of a plea agreement, Turpin pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily injury. The Tarrant County District Attorney’s office noted that he was sentenced to two years of deferred adjudication probation, which allows charges to be dismissed upon completing the terms.
